Numismatic issues dedicated to the anniversary of 130 years since Iuliu Hossu’s birth

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as of 2 March 2015, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, a silver coin dedicated to the anniversary of 130 years since Iuliu Hossu’s birth.

The coin has the following technical characteristics:

  • Face value: lei 10
  • Metal: silver
  • Fineness: 999‰
  • Shape:round
  • Diameter: 37 mm
  • Weight: 31.103 g
  • Quality: proof
  • Edge: milled

Obverse: the Cathedral of the Transfiguration in Cluj-Napoca, the face value “10 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania, the year of issue “2015” and the inscriptions “ROMANIA” and “CATEDRALA „SCHIMBAREA LA FATA” - CLUJ-NAPOCA”.

Reverse: the portrait of Iuliu Hossu and his birth and death years, “1885” and “1970”, respectively; on the outer ring, the inscription “CARDINALUL IULIU HOSSU” in an arc.


The silver coins are individually housed in transparent plastic capsules. They are accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French.

Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The mintage of this numismatic issue is 250 coins.

The selling price is lei 350.00, VAT excluded, per silver coin, including the leaflet.

The silver coins dedicated to the anniversary of 130 years since Iuliu Hossu’s birth are legal tender on the territory of Romania.

The silver coins will be put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara.
