Numismatic issue: NBR launches, starting 26 March 2007, a gold coin, a silver coin and a coppered tombac coin dedicated to the centennial anniversary from the birth of Mircea Eliade - writer, philosopher and historian of religions.

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 - The Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as from 26 March 2007, the NBR is to launch a gold coin, a silver coin and a coppered tombac coin dedicated to the centennial anniversary from the birth of Mircea Eliade - writer, philosopher and historian of religions.

1. The characteristics of the gold coin are the following:

  • face value: RON 100;
  • shape: round;
  • fineness: 900/1000;
  • quality: proof;
  • weight: 6.452 grams;
  • diameter: 21 mm;
  • edge: milled.

Obverse: in the middle, the face value of "100 LEI", in the upper part, Romania's coat of arms, and beneath, the year of issue "2007" and the inscription "ROMANIA".

Reverse: in the middle, the portrait of Mircea Eliade, and on the outside ring, the circular inscription "MIRCEA ELIADE" and the years "1907-1986", separated by a floral decoration.

2. The characteristics of the silver coin are the following:

  • face value: RON 5;
  • shape: round;
  • fineness: 999/1000;
  • quality: proof;
  • weight: 15.55 grams;
  • diameter: 30 mm;
  • edge: milled.

Obverse: in the middle, the face value of "5 LEI", in the upper part, Romania's coat of arms, and beneath, the year of issue "2007" and the inscription "ROMANIA".

Reverse: in the middle, the portrait of Mircea Eliade, and on the outside ring, the circular inscription "MIRCEA ELIADE" and the years "1907-1986", separated by a floral decoration.

3. The characteristics of the coppered tombac coin are the following:

  • face value: RON 1;
  • shape: round;
  • quality: proof;
  • weight: 23.25 grams;
  • diameter: 37 mm;
  • edge: milled.

Obverse: in the middle, the face value of "1 LEU", in the upper part, Romania's coat of arms, and beneath, the year of issue "2007" and the inscription "ROMANIA".

Reverse: in the middle, the portrait of Mircea Eliade, and on the outside ring, the circular inscription "MIRCEA ELIADE" and the years "1907-1986", separated by a floral decoration.

Each coin is encapsulated in a transparent plastic case and is accompanied by a leaflet (in Romanian, English and French), which includes a two-page authentication certificate bearing the signatures of both Governor and Head Cashier. The coins come in special cases bearing the NBR logo.

The issue of 750 coins is divided as follows: 250 gold coins, 250 silver coins and 250 coppered tombac coins.

The selling price (VAT excluded) is of RON 555 for the gold coin, RON 89 for the silver coin and RON 55 for the coppered tombac coin, and does not include the cost of the case.

The gold, silver and coppered tombac coins dedicated to the centennial anniversary from the birth of Mircea Eliade are legal tender in Romania.

The design of the coins is protected by registration with the State Office of Trademarks in Romania. Forgery or counterfeiting of these coins is an infringement of the law and shall be penalised accordingly.

The National Bank of Romania branches in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara are in charge of putting into circulation for numismatic purposes the gold, silver and coppered tombac coins in the issue dedicated to the centennial anniversary from the birth
