The Treaty of Rome is the document certifying the establishment of the European Community. On 25 March 1957, in Capitol Square in Rome, the representatives of France, Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg signed the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community. In order to highlight the importance of concluding the Treaty of Rome for the recent European history, having regard to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 - The Statute of the NBR, as from 10 May 2007, the National Bank of Romania is to launch a collector silver coin dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome.

Characteristics of the silver coin:

  • face value: LEI 10;
  • shape: round;
  • fineness: 999/1000;
  • quality: proof;
  • weight: 31.103 g;
  • diameter: 37 mm;
  • edge: milled.

Obverse: in the middle, the map of the European Union, on the right, Romania's coat of arms and below the inscription "ROMANIA"; the face value of "10 LEI" beneath the map and on the outer ring, in the left upper part, the two-row circular inscription "UNIUNEA EUROPEANA - 2007".

Reverse: in the middle, the page with the signatures of the Treaty of Rome on a background evocating the paving (designed by Michelangelo) in Rome's Capitol Square and the inscriptions "EUROPA" and "50 ANI"; on the outer ring, the inscriptions "TRATATUL DE LA ROMA" and "25 MARTIE 1957" are inscribed in the upper part and the lower part respectively.

The coins come in transparent plastic capsules, along with leaflets describing the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French. Each leaflet includes two pages representing the authentication certificate, bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Head Cashier of the National Bank of Romania. The coins will be sold in appropriate cases bearing the NBR logo - BNR - on the lid.

The issue of 500 coins is to be sold at a price of RON 125 per coin (VAT excluded), which does not include the cost of the case.

The silver coins dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome are legal tender in Romania.

The design of the coins is protected by registration with the State Office of Trademarks in Romania. Forgery or counterfeiting of these coins is an infringement of the law and shall be penalised accordingly.
