Numismatic issue: NBR launches for numismatic purposes, a gold coin, a silver coin and a tombac coin dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the proclamation of independence of Romania

In accordance with the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 - The Statute of the National Bank of Romania, The Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as from 20 August 2007, the National Bank of Romania is to launch, for numismatic purposes, a set of three coins made of gold, silver and coppered tombac dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the proclamation of independence of Romania.

1. The coppered tombac coin has the following features:

  • face value: leu 1;
  • shape: round;
  • quality: proof;
  • weight: 23.5 grams;
  • diameter: 37 mm;
  • edge: ridged.

Obverse: in the lower half, part of "Atacul de la Smârdan" ("The Smârdan Assault"), a painting by Nicolae Grigorescu; in the upper half, the face value of "1 LEU", Romania's coat of arms and the year of issue "2007", as well as the circular inscriptions "ROMANIA" and "ATACUL DE LA SMARDAN".

Reverse: a scene featuring the meeting of the two chambers of the Parliament of Romania when the country's independence was proclaimed; above, the year 1877; in the upper part, "PROCLAMAREA INDEPENDENTEI" inscribed circularly.

2. The silver coin has the following characteristics:

  • face value: leu 5;
  • shape: round;
  • purity: 999/1000;
  • quality: proof;
  • weight: 15.551 grams;
  • diameter: 30 mm;
  • edge: ridged.

Obverse: in the lower half, part of "Atacul de la Smârdan" ("The Smârdan Assault"), a painting by Nicolae Grigorescu; in the upper half, the face value of "5 LEI", Romania's coat of arms and the year of issue "2007", as well as the circular inscriptions "ROMANIA" and "ATACUL DE LA SMARDAN".

Reverse: a scene featuring the meeting of the two chambers of the Parliament of Romania when the country's independence was proclaimed; above, the year 1877; in the upper part, "PROCLAMAREA INDEPENDENTEI" inscribed circularly.

3. The gold coin has the following characteristics:

  • face value: leu 100;
  • shape: round;
  • purity: 900/1000;
  • quality: proof;
  • weight: 6.452 grams;
  • diameter: 21 mm;
  • edge: ridged.

Obverse: in the lower half, part of "Atacul de la Smârdan" ("The Smârdan Assault"), a painting by Nicolae Grigorescu; in the upper half, the face value of "100 LEI", Romania's coat of arms and the year of issue "2007", as well as the circular inscriptions "ROMANIA" and "ATACUL DE LA SMARDAN".

Reverse: a scene featuring the meeting of the two chambers of the Parliament of Romania when the country's independence was proclaimed; above, the year 1877; in the upper part, "PROCLAMAREA INDEPENDENTEI" inscribed circularly.

Each coin is embedded in a transparent plastic capsule and is accompanied by a leaflet in Romanian, English and French. The leaflet comes with an authentication certificate bearing the signatures of both the Governor and the Head Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The sets of coins made of gold, silver and coppered tombac will be presented in appropriate cases having the NBR logo - BNR - inscribed on the lid.

The numismatic issue comprises 130 sets of coins.

The collector coins in the issue dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the proclamation of independence of Romania are put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi, and Timişoara.
