At end-May 2008, foreign exchange reserves of the National Bank of Romania stood at EUR 25,129 million.
The EUR 212 million decrease recorded in the reported month was due to the following:
- EUR 656.56 million worth of inflows representing the change in the foreign-exchange reserve requirements of credit institutions, the funds deposited in the account of the European Commission, a.s.o.
- EUR 868.56 million worth of outflows consisting in principal repayments and interest payments on public external debt, payments to the European Commission, the change in the foreign-exchange reserve requirements of credit institutions, a.s.o.
The gold stock remained at 103.7 tonnes. However, following the developments in the world price of gold, its value rose to EUR 1,892.48 million, taking the international reserves of the National Bank of Romania (foreign currencies and gold) to EUR 27,021 million.
In June 2008, payments due on public and publicly guaranteed external debt amount to EUR 758 million, of which EUR 663.75 million are taken by the Eurobond issue maturing on 27 June 2008.
