Numismatic issue - coins dedicated to the 625th anniversary of Mircea cel Bătrân (Mircea the Elder)’s ascension to the throne of Wallachia

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 – The Statute of the National Bank of Romania, on 12 September 2011, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, two coins: a brass commemorative circulation coin with face value of bani 50 and a gold collector coin with face value of lei 200, both of them dedicated to the 625th anniversary of Mircea cel Bătrân (Mircea the Elder)’s ascension to the throne of Wallachia.

The two coins have the following characteristics:

The coins feature the following design:

Obverse of the lei 200 coin: partly overlapping a hatched circle, some design items encompassing the inscriptions “ROMANIA” and “200”, a partial view of Cozia Monastery, the year of issue “2011”, the face value “200 LEI” and the coat of arms of Romania.

Obverse of the bani 50 coin: partly overlapping a hatched circle, some design items encompassing the inscriptions “ROMANIA” and “50”, a partial view of Cozia Monastery, the year of issue “2011”, the face value “50 BANI” and the coat of arms of Romania.

Reverse (common for both coins): the portrait of Prince Mircea cel Bătrân in an oval medallion and the inscription “MIRCEA CEL BATRAN 1386-1418” in an arc against the background resembling a mural ornament on the church of Cozia Monastery.

Both coins are legal tender on the territory of Romania.

The gold collector coins with face value of lei 200, housed in transparent plastic cases, will be accompanied by a leaflet featuring an overview of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French. The leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of both the Governor and the Head Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The commemorative circulation coins with face value of bani 50 will share the same technical characteristics with the regular bani 50 coins that are currently in circulation.

The commemorative circulation coins with face value of bani 50 will circulate in parallel with the bani 50 coins issued in 2005 and 2010 which are currently in circulation.

The gold collector coins with face value of lei 200 in the numismatic issue dedicated to the 625th anniversary of Mircea cel Bătrân’s ascension to the throne of Wallachia will be put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj‑Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara.

The selling price of the gold collector coin with face value of lei 200, including the presentation leaflet, is lei 4,360.00, excluding VAT.

The commemorative circulation coins with face value of bani 50 in the numismatic issue dedicated to the 625th anniversary of Mircea cel Bătrân’s ascension to the throne of Wallachia will be put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara when making cash payments to credit institutions/State Treasury.
