Numismatic issue - a silver coin dedicated to Densuş Church

Pursuant to Law No. 312/2004-The Statute of the NBR, the National Bank of Romania is to launch, starting 13 November 2006, a silver coin with face value of RON 5 dedicated to Densuş Church, a 13th century worship place unique in the Romanian medieval architecture.

Characteristics of the coin:

  • shape: round;
  • fineness: 999/1000;
  • quality: proof;
  • weight: 31.103 grams;
  • diameter: 37 mm;
  • edge: smooth.

The obverse shows on the left side a part of the central supporting pillar on which the 14th century icon "The Holy Trinity of Densuş" was painted; in the middle, to the right, Romania's coat-of-arms and, on the right side, near the frame, the circular inscription "ROMANIA".

The reverse features in the middle, to the left, the Densuş Church, seen from the perspective of the altar apse; to the right, part of the central pillar with the tombstone of the Roman General Longinus and, on the outer left side, semicircularly, near the frame, the inscription "BISERICA DE LA DENSUS" on two lines.

Each silver coin is encapsulated in transparent plastic cases and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity (in Romanian and English) bearing the signature of both Governor and Head Cashier, as well as by a prospectus.

The issue of 500 coins is to be sold at a price of RON 120 per coin (VAT excluded) and does not include the cost of the case.

The silver coins dedicated to the Densuş Church are legal tender in Romania.

The design of the coins is protected by registration with the State Office of Trademarks in Romania. Forgery or counterfeiting of these coins is an infringement of the law and shall be penalised accordingly.

The National Bank of Romania branches in Bucharest, Cluj, Iaşi and Timiş are in charge of putting into circulation the issue dedicated to the Densuş Church for numismatic purposes.
