Numismatic issue - a silver coin dedicated to the 150th anniversary since the internationalisation of the legal regime of the Danube and the establishment of the European Commission of the Danube

In compliance with the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 - The Statute of the National Bank of Romania, the National Bank of Romania is to launch, starting with 21 August 2006, a silver coin with face value of 5 lei, dedicated to the 150th anniversary since the internationalisation of the legal regime of the Danube and the establishment of the European Commission of the Danube.

Characteristics of the coin:

  • face value: 5 LEI;
  • metal: silver;
  • shape: round;
  • weight: 31.103 grams;
  • diameter: 37 mm;
  • fineness: 999/1,000;
  • quality: proof;
  • edge: smooth.

Obverse: in the upper half, the map of the Danube Delta and the year of issue "2006" on a frosted background; in the lower half, Romania's coat of arms, the inscription "ROMANIA" and the face value of 5 LEI.

Reverse: in the foreground, a pelican in the middle of vegetation specific to the Danube Delta, behind it the Danube River, and in the background, the inspection vessel of the European Commission of the Danube "Carolus Primus" sailing along the opposite river bank, in front of Sulina lighthouse, built by the European Commission of the Danube. In the upper half, the two-row circular text "COMISIA EUROPEANA A DUNARII 1856 - 2006".

Each silver coin is embedded in a transparent plastic capsule and is accompanied by an authentication certificate (in Romanian and English) bearing the signature of both the Governor and the Head Cashier, as well as by a leaflet. The coins come in appropriate cases.

The issue consists of 500 coins. The selling price, VAT excluded, is lei 135 and does not include the price of the case.

The silver coins dedicated to the 150th anniversary since the internationalisation of the legal regime of the Danube and the establishment of the European Commission of the Danube are legal tender in Romania.

The design of the silver coin is protected by registration with the Romanian State Office for Inventions and Trademarks. Forgery or counterfeiting of these coins is an infringement of the law and shall be penalised accordingly.

The coins in the issue celebrating 150 years since the establishment of the European Commission of the Danube are put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi, and Timişoara.
