Numismatic issue - a set of three silver coins celebrating the "International Year of Pure Water - Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve"

Pursuant to Law No. 101/1998-The NBR Act and Ordinance No. 45/1998 issued by the Government of Romania, as approved by Law No. 244/1998 on vesting the National Bank of Romania with the power to put into circulation numismatic coins made of precious metals, the National Bank of Romania shall issue starting 27 November 2003 a set of three silver coins with face value of ROL 50 celebrating the "International Year of Pure Water - Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve".

Characteristics of the coins are:

  • shape: round;
  • metal: silver;
  • fineness: 999/1000;
  • quality: proof;
  • weight: 15.551 grams;
  • diameter: 27 mm.

Obverse is common to all three coins and displays Romania's coat-of-arms, the face value "50 LEI", the inscription "ROMANIA" and the year of issue "2003". An allegoric representation of a drop falling on the water surface having the globe in the middle. The fall of the water drop is suggested symbolically by three arcs of a circle, between which the text "ANUL INTERNATIONAL AL APEI PURE" is inscribed on two lines.

Reverse includes:

  • common elements: the inscription "REZERVATIA BIOSFEREI DELTA DUNARII;
  • specific elements: images of bird species protected or strictly protected in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, such as: curly pelican - monument of nature, great egret - monument of nature, and kingfisher- an endemic species. The Latin names of the three species are inscribed as well.

The silver coins in the series "International Year of Pure Water - Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve" are encapsulated in transparent plastic cases bearing the NBR's logo on the cover. Each set of coins is accompanied by an authentication certificate (in Romanian and English) bearing the signature of both the Governor and the Head Cashier, as well as by a prospectus.

The issue of 500 sets of coins is to be sold both on domestic and foreign markets, and is priced at ROL 1,710,000 per set.

For numismatic purposes, the silver coins put into circulation by the National Bank of Romania may be purchased by natural and legal persons. They may be held or exchanged by observing the provisions of Art. 2 of Ordinance No. 45/1998 issued by the Government of Romania, as approved by Law No. 244/1998.

The design of the pieces is protected by registration with the Romanian State Office for Inventions and Trademarks. Forgery or counterfeiting of these coins is an infringement of the law and shall be penalised accordingly.
