Numismatic issue - a gold coin in the series "History of Feudal Christian Art", celebrating 625 years since the start of the building of Bran castle

Pursuant to Law No. 101/1998-The NBR Act and Ordinance No. 45/1998 issued by the Government of Romania, as approved by Law No. 244/1998 on vesting the National Bank of Romania with the power to put into circulation numismatic coins made of precious metals, the National Bank of Romania shall issue starting 20 October 2003 a coin with face value of ROL 5,000 in the series "History of Feudal Christian Art", celebrating 625 years since the start of the building of Bran castle.

Characteristics of the coin:

  • fineness: 999/1000;
  • quality: proof;
  • weight: 31.103 g;
  • edge: smooth;
  • diameter: 35 mm

Obverse: A split shield engraved in the centre, each part featuring an adornment and armorial bearings, Romania's coat-of-arms on the left side and the armorial bearings of Braşov on the right side. The inscription "ROMÂNIA" and the year of issue "2003" are inscribed on the upper side, above a rhombic ornament. The face value "5000 LEI" is inscribed on the lower part.

Reverse: The reproduction of the model of Bran Castle with a scarf bearing the inscription "CASTELUL BRAN" in the lower part. The inscription "625 ANI DE LA ÎNCEPEREA CONSTRUCŢIEI" is engraved half round. The years of celebration "1378" and "2004" are paced in a shield-shaped inset.

The gold coins are encapsulated in transparent plastic cases and are accompanied by an authentication certificate (in both Romanian and English) bearing a series and the signature of the Governor and the Head Cashier of the National Bank of Romania as well as by a prospectus.

The issue of 250 coins is to be sold both on domestic and foreign markets, at the price of ROL 17,670,000 per coin.

For numismatic purposes, the gold coins issued by the National Bank of Romania may be purchased by natural or legal persons. They may be held or exchanged by observing the provisions of Art. 2 of Ordinance No. 45/1998 issued by the Government of Romania, as approved by Law No. 244/1998.

The gold coins dedicated to the celebration of 625 years since the start of the building of Bran Castle are legal tender in Romania.

The design of this banknote is protected by registration with the State Office of Trademarks in Romania. Forgery or counterfeiting of these coins is an infringement of the law and shall be penalised accordingly.
