At end-December 2002, the balance of payments current account showed a deficit of USD 1,573 million, down 29.2 percent from the same year-ago period.

Medium- and long-term external debt expanded by 26.5 percent versus December 2001 and totalled USD 15,084 million at end-December 2002.

Public and publicly guaranteed debt amounted to USD 9,503 million at end-December 2002, accounting for 63 percent of the medium- and long-term debt (against 64.7 percent at end-December 2001). At end-December 2002, external private debt added 32.7 percent, reaching USD 5,581 million.

At end-December 2002, medium- and long-term debt service ratio stood at 18.8 percent, against 18.4 percent at end-2001.

Import cover increased from 3.5 months at end-2001 to 4.7 months at end-December 2002.
