Press release on withdrawal of ROL 1000 note issued in 1998

Pursuant to the provisions under Article 19 of Law 101/1998 - The NBR Act - the National Bank of Romania will withdraw from circulation, as of 15 October 2001, the ROL 1000 banknote featuring Mihai Eminescu issued in June 1998.

After 31 December 2001, this banknote will cease to be legal tender and will not be used as means of payment any longer.

The withdrawal of ROL 1000 banknote will proceed as follows:

Between 15 October 2001 and 16 December 2001 the above mentioned notes will be received from households for payments by all retailers and other commercial or noncommercial entities, who will have the obligation to receive the banknotes, not to put them again into circulation and to deposit them on a daily basis with the banks where they hold their accounts;

Between 17 December and 31 December 2001, the notes will be accepted only by banks from individuals, companies and other institutions for payments or to be exchanged;

After 31 December 2001, the 1000 banknotes - 1998 issue - cease to be legal tender, banks will no longer accept them from individuals for payments and will cease exchanging them.

Between 3 and 31 January 2002, the ROL 1000 banknotes issued in June 1998, which ceased to be legal tender, may be exchanged by the National Bank of Romania branches only.
