At end-January 2003, the balance of payments current account showed a deficit of USD 15 million, down 81.7 percent from the same year-ago period.

Medium- and long-term external debt picked up 2.4 percent versus December 2002 and totalled USD 15,550 million at end-January 2003.

Public and publicly guaranteed debt amounted to USD 9,707 million at end-January 2003, accounting for 62.4 percent of the medium- and long-term debt (against 62.8 percent at end-December 2002). In January 2003, external private debt advanced 3.3 percent, reaching USD 5,843 million.
