NBR's International Reserves in December 2003

06.01.2004

At end-December 2003, foreign exchange reserves of the National Bank of Romania ran at EUR 6,399.3 million.

The EUR 228 million contraction in December 2003 was the result of the following:

  • EUR 91.7 million worth of principal repayments and payment of interest on external public debt, direct and bearing the guarantee of the Ministry of Public Finance;
  • EUR 67.5 million worth of sales by the central bank on the foreign exchange market;
  • EUR 13.1 million worth of incomes from international reserve management;
  • EUR 81.9 million in other net outflows (change in the foreign-exchange required reserves deposited by commercial banks, surrenders to official forex reserves, bank fees and commissions, membership quotas, a. s. o.).

The gold stock stayed at 105.4 tonnes, but following the developments in the world price of gold its value slid to EUR 1,120.8 million, taking the international reserves of the National Bank of Romania (foreign currency and gold) to over EUR 7.52 billion.

In 2004, payments due on external public debt, direct and bearing the guarantee of the Ministry of Public Finance, amount to EUR 1,374 million.
