Balance of Payments in January - June 2003

At end-June 2003, the balance-of-payments current account showed a deficit of EUR 1,246 million, up 27.3 percent from the second half of 2002.

Medium- and long-term external debt crept down 2.6 percent versus December 2002 and totalled EUR 14,207 million at end-June 2003.

Public and publicly guaranteed external debt amounted to EUR 8,933 million at end-June 2003, accounting for 62.9 percent of the medium- and long-term debt. In June 2003, external private debt ran at EUR 5,274 million, down 2.7 percent against end-2002.

Medium- and long-term external debt service ratio came in at 19.1 percent at end-June 2003, against 21.4 percent at end-2002.
