Balance of Payments in January 2004

In January 2004, the balance-of-payments current account posted a deficit of EUR 108 million, up 3.9 times year on year.

Medium- and long-term external debt ran at EUR 15,345 million, inching up 0.6 percent month on month.

Public and publicly guaranteed external debt amounted to EUR 9,726 million in January 2004, accounting for 63.4 percent of medium- and long-term debt against 63.3 percent at end-2003. Private external debt crept up by 0.5 percent from end-2003 to EUR 5,619 million.

External debt service ratio stood at 18.6 percent at end-January against 19.9 percent at end-2003.

At end-January 2004 , import cover increased to 4.6 months from 4 months at end-2003.
