At end-January 2006, foreign exchange reserves of the National Bank of Romania stood at EUR 17,266.2 million.
The EUR 471.5 million increase in January 2006 was due to the following:
- EUR 912.9 million worth of inflows from incomes from international reserve management, change in the foreign-exchange reserve requirements of commercial banks, surrenders to official forex reserves, a.s.o.;
- EUR 441.4 million worth of outflows consisting of principal repayments and interest payments on public and publicly guaranteed external debt, the change in foreign-exchange reserve requirements of commercial banks, bank commissions, a.s.o.
The gold stock stood flat at 104.8 tonnes. Following the developments in the world price of gold, its value went up to EUR 1,586.8 million, taking the international reserves of the National Bank of Romania (foreign exchange and gold) to more than EUR 18.85 billion.
By end-2006, payments due on public and publicly guaranteed external debt amount to EUR 1,201 million.
