Numismatic issue - a gold coin dedicated to the commemoration of 400 years from the union of Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia under the leadership of Michael the Brave

In accordance with the prerogatives conferred upon by Law no. 101/1998, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation, starting 1st August 2000, a gold coin with face value of lei 5,000 dedicated to the commemoration of 400 years from the union of Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia under the leadership of Michael the Brave.

Coin Description:

Obverse: Romanian Coat of Arms, face value: "5000 LEI", year of issue: "2000", inscription "ROMANIA" and the ruler's seal bearing the escutcheons of the three Romanian countries: the Walachian eagle, an ox head for Moldavia and lions for Transylvania.

Reverse: Portrait of Prince Michael the Brave, wearing a fur-lined mantle and a feather- decorated cap against the background of Mihai Voda church in Bucharest; circularly, the inscription: "400 ANI DE LA UNIREA TARII ROMANESTI, TRANSILVANIEI SI MOLDOVEI SUB MIHAI VITEAZUL"; center-left: "1600-2000".

Mintage: 500 pieces for domestic market; maximum mintage: up to 1,500 pieces.

These gold coins are encapsulated in transparent plastic cases and have authentication certificates (in Romanian and English) signed both by the NBR Governor and the Chief Cashier.

For numismatic purposes individuals or corporate bodies may purchase the gold coins according to Art. 2 of Govt. Ordinance no. 45/1998 approved by Law no. 244/1998.

This coin is legal tender in Romania.

The design of this coin is protected by registration with the State Office for TradeMarks (OSIM) in Romania. Forgery or attempted forgery will be punished according to the Romanian Criminal Code.

Putting into circulation for numismatic purposes of these lei 5,000 gold coins – year of issue 2000 – is to be done through the NBR branches in Romania.
