International reserves – January 2024

On 31 January 2024, the National Bank of Romania’s foreign exchange reserves stood at EUR 61,416 million, compared to EUR 59,770 million on 31 December 2023.

During the month, the following flows were recorded:

  • EUR 5,665 million worth of inflows representing: changes in credit institutions’ foreign currency-denominated required reserves with the NBR; inflows into the Ministry of Finance’s accounts (including total nominal amounts of approximatively EUR 3,670 million from the Ministry of Finance’s issues of USD-denominated Eurobonds); inflows into the European Commission’s account and other;
  • EUR 4,019 million worth of outflows representing: changes in credit institutions’ foreign currency-denominated required reserves with the NBR; interest payments and principal repayments on foreign currency public debt (including the redemption of the Ministry of Finance’s USD-denominated bonds in amount of approximatively EUR 693 million) and other.

The gold stock remained steady at 103.6 tonnes. However, following the change in the international price of gold, its value amounted to EUR 6,269 million.

On 31 January 2024, Romania’s international reserves (foreign currencies and gold) stood at EUR 67,685 million, compared to EUR 65,983 million on 31 December 2023.

During February 2024, the payments due on the foreign currency-denominated public and publicly guaranteed debt amount to approximately EUR 825 million.
