Numismatic issues dedicated to mark 200 years since the birth of Alexandru Ioan Cuza

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, on 19 October 2020, the National Bank of Romania put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, a gold coin and a silver coin to mark 200 years since the birth of Alexandru Ioan Cuza.

The coins have the following characteristics:

Obverse of the gold coin: the image of the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” Palace in Ruginoasa, the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the face value “500 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2020”.

Obverse of the silver coin: the image of the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” Palace in Ruginoasa, the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the face value “10 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2020”.

Reverse common to gold and silver coins: the portrait of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the inscriptions “ALEXANDRU IOAN CUZA” and “1820-1873”, his birth and death years, in an arc.

The gold and silver coins will be housed separately in transparent plastic capsules and will be accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French. Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The maximum mintage of the gold coin is 1,000 coins, and the maximum mintage of the silver coin is 5,000 coins.

The selling prices are as follows:

  • lei 10,400.00, VAT excluded, for the gold coin, including the leaflet;
  • lei 365.00, VAT excluded, for the silver coin, including the leaflet.

The gold and silver coins marking 200 years since the birth of Alexandru Ioan Cuza are legal tender on the territory of Romania.

The gold and silver coins marking 200 years since the birth of Alexandru Ioan Cuza will be put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, through the regional branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Constanța, Craiova, Iaşi and Timişoara.
