National Bank of Romania is to launch for numismatic purposes a gold coin dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of King Carol I

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 - The Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as from 15 April 2009, the National Bank of Romania is to launch for numismatic purposes a gold coin with face value of leu 500 dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of King Carol I.

The gold coin has the following characteristics:

  • face value: leu 500;
  • fineness: 999 ‰;
  • weight: 31.103 g;
  • shape: round;
  • diameter: 35 mm;
  • quality: proof;
  • edge: smooth.

Obverse: the coat-of-arms of Romania; the year of issue - 2009 and the face value of the coin - 500 LEI; Peleş Castle in a laurel garland and the inscription "ROMANIA" engraved circularly.

Reverse: at the centre, the portrait of King Carol I and the great coat-of-arms of the Kingdom of Romania; to the left and to the right, the years 1839 and 2009; on the outer ring, the circular inscriptions "NIHIL SINE DEO" above and "CAROL I REGE" down.

Each coin is embedded in a transparent plastic capsule and is accompanied by a leaflet in Romanian, English and French.

The leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of both the Governor and the Head Cashier of the National Bank of Romania. The coins will be displayed in appropriate cases having the NBR logo - BNR - inscribed on the lid.

The numismatic issue comprises 250 coins.

The collector coins made of gold dedicated to the 170th anniversary of the birth of King Carol I are put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi, and Timişoara.
