Numismatic issue: 160 years since the introduction of gas lighting in Bucharest

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as of 20 November 2017, , the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, a coppered tombac coin launched to mark 160 years since the introduction of gas lighting in Bucharest.

The coin has the following characteristics:

  • Face value: Leu 1
  • Metal: coppered tombac
  • Fineness: -
  • Shape: round
  • Diameter: 37 mm
  • Weight: 23.5 g
  • Quality: proof
  • Edge: milled

Obverse: a vintage snapshot of Bucharest, the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the coat of arms of Romania, the face value “1 Leu” and the year of issue “2017”.

Reverse: a vintage image of the Filaret station, the inscriptions “INTRODUCEREA ILUMINATULUI PUBLIC CU PETROL LAMPANT IN BUCURESTI” and “160ANI”.

The coppered tombac coins are individually housed in transparent plastic capsules and are accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French. Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The mintage of this issue is 250 coppered tombac coins.

The selling price is lei 100, VAT excluded, per coppered tombac coin, including the leaflet.

The coppered tombac coins marking 160 years since the introduction of gas lighting in Bucharest are legal tender on the territory of Romania.

The coppered tombac coins will be put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, through the regional branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara.
