Numismatic issue: 150 years since the establishment of a new monetary system and the minting of national coins

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as of 26 April 2017, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, a set of three coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac) and a collector coin made of brass occasioned by 150 years since the enactment of the law concerning the establishment of a new monetary system and the minting of national coins.

The coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac) in the set and the collector coin made of brass have the following technical characteristics:

Obverse of the gold coin: a composition containing the images of the coins issued in 1867, the arc inscriptions “ROMANIA” and “SISTEMUL MONETAR NATIONAL-150 ANI”, the face value “100 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2017”.

Obverse of the silver coin: a composition containing the images of the coins issued in 1867, the arc inscriptions “ROMANIA” and “SISTEMUL MONETAR NATIONAL-150 ANI”, the face value “10 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2017”.

Obverse of the copper-plated tombac coin: a composition containing the images of the coins issued in 1867, the arc inscriptions “ROMANIA” and “SISTEMUL MONETAR NATIONAL-150 ANI”, the face value “1 LEU”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2017”.

Reverse (common to all coins made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac): the portrait of Carol I, the arc inscriptions “CAROL I” and “1867” – the year when the law establishing the national monetary system was enacted.

The gold, silver and copper-plated tombac coins are individually housed in transparent plastic capsules. The sets of three coins are accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French. Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The mintage is as follows:

  • 150 sets of three coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac); and
  • 5,000 brass collector coins of bani 50.

The selling prices are as follows:

  • lei 2,015.00, VAT excluded, per set of three coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac), including the leaflet; and
  • lei 9.50, VAT excluded, for the brass collector coins of bani 50.

The gold, silver and copper-plated tombac coins and the brass collector coins of bani 50 occasioned by 150 years since the enactment of the law concerning the establishment of a new monetary system and the minting of national coins are legal tender on the territory of Romania.

The sets of three coins and the brass collector coins occasioned by 150 years since the enactment of the law concerning the establishment of a new monetary system and the minting of national coins will be put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi, and Timişoara.
