Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as of 22 February 2016, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, a silver coin dedicated to the anniversary of 175 years since the birth of Petru Poni.
The coin has the following characteristics:

- Fineness: 999‰
- Shape: round
- Diameter: 37 mm
- Weight: 31.103 g
- Quality: proof
- Edge: milled
Obverse: an old image of the University of Iași, where Petru Poni was an academic, the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the face value “10 Lei”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2016”.
Reverse: Petru Poni’s portrait, a composition that depicts his teaching and scientific activity, the inscription “PETRU PONI” and his birth and death years, “1841” and “1925”.
The silver coins are individually housed in transparent plastic capsules. They are accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French.
Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.
The mintage of this numismatic issue is 200 coins.
The selling price is lei 330.00, VAT excluded, per silver coin, including the leaflet.
The silver coins dedicated to the anniversary of 175 years since the birth of Petru Poni are legal tender on the territory of Romania.
The silver coins will be put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara.
