Obverse: Portrait of the composer George Enescu (1881-1955). Centered, carnation flower (Dianthus dianthus), two musical notes and a violin. On the upper part, the Coat of Arms of Romania, name of the issuing central bank "BANCA NAŢIONALĂ A ROMÂNIEI" and "BNR" in an inset. On the lower part, banknote denomination in figures and letters "50 000 lei CINCIZECI MII". On the left, authorized signatures of the Governor, of the Chief Cashier and the year of issue "2001". The value "CINCIZECI MII 50 000" is placed vertically, on the right. |
Reverse: "Romanian Athenaeum" Concert hall. On the right, musician's piano. On the upper part, denomination value "50 000" vertical and horizontal, the name of the central bank "BANCA NAŢIONALĂ A ROMÂNIEI" and "BNR" logo. On the lower part, on the right: denomination value in letters and figures "CINCIZECI MII lei 50 000"; left, "BNR" logo within a rectangle. Left from the transparent window, penalty text, placed vertically: "FALSIFICAREA ACESTOR BILETE SE PEDEPSEŞTE CONFORM LEGII" (FORGERY IS PUNISHED ACCORDING TO THE LAW). The series and numbers of the banknote printed in letters and figures with black and red ink, as follows: fonts of the same height printed vertically on the left side with black ink and fonts of ascending height on the right side with red ink. |
Security features:
- Transparent window: with embossed denomination value "50000".
- Shadow image ("watermark"): portrait and "BNR" logo, above the transparent window (when looking at the reverse). The shadow image is visible only when the banknote is held against the light.
- Perfect register: Lyre, visible when the banknote is held against the light. Parts of the palette printed on the obverse beneath the name of the central bank match perfectly with the parts printed on the reverse and make up a complete image.
- Pearlescent feature: the portrait and the "BNR" logo. When the note is tilted, the pearlescent feature is visible.

The design of this note is protected by registration with the Romanian State Office for Trade Marks (OSIM). Any color full-size reproduction may be done upon prior written permission of the National Bank of Romania. Forgery or attempted forgery shall be punished, according to the Romanian Criminal Code - Art. 282, with 3 to 12 years imprisonment.
